SOPHIE GINGRAS BUREAU AND HER SON, JACQUES

Sophie Gingras Bureau was photographed with her son, Jacques Bureau, as a child.

Jacques Bureau was born in Trois-Rivières on July 9, 1860. He studied at the Séminaire de Nicolet and the Université Laval. He was admitted as a lawyer in 1882. With his degree in hand, he left for western Canada. Called to the Bar in Manitoba, he practiced law in Winnipeg and Duluth, Minnesota, United States. On the point of being appointed as a judge, he returned to Trois-Rivières, as his father, Joseph-Napoléon Bureau, was seriously ill.

On July 15, 1884, he married Ida Béliveau, with whom he had two children: Blanche and Édouard.

A Liberal, Jacques Bureau was elected MP for Trois-Rivières to the House of Commons in 1900, then re-elected in 1904, 1908, 1911, 1917, and 1921. His political career earned him an appointment as Solicitor General on January 15, 1907, and as Minister of Customs and Excise.

On September 29, 1925, he was appointed to the Senate as a representative for the La Salle division.

He died suddenly on January 23, 1933, following a heart attack.
