AUGUSTE PANNETON

Auguste Panneton was born in January 1888 in Trois-Rivières. He completed his classical studies at the Séminaire Saint-Joseph. He married Anne-Marie Taché (1886-1951), born in Saint-Hyacinthe; her godfather was Msgr. Alexandre-Antonin Taché (1823-1894), her uncle, a missionary in Manitoba and bishop of Saint-Boniface. Auguste Panneton died the year this work was produced. He was 78 years old.

Auguste Panneton was an ear, nose, and throat specialist. The son of a doctor (Dr. Éphrem Panneton), brother of a doctor (Dr. Philippe Panneton, the author Ringuet), and father of a doctor (Dr. André Panneton), Auguste Panneton also wrote several books under the pseudonym Sylvain: En flânant dans les portages (1932), Mon petit pays (1933), Dans le bois (1940), Le long de la route (1946), Au fil de l’eau (1959), La Vie médicale au vieux Trois-Rivières (1965), and Par les chemins qui marchent (1965).

He was also the father of Father Jean Panneton, superior of the Séminaire (1989-2012), and the father-in-law of artist Louise Panneton née Louise René de Cotret (1925-2023), who illustrated his book Au fil de l’eau with her drawings.

As for the artist, Harvey Rivard, although he signed this painting, he is primarily recognized for his talents and long career in photography.

Born in 1913 in Trois-Rivières, his first name is his mother’s surname. Indeed, Harvey Rivard was the son of Régina Harvey and Joseph-Sévère Rivard, a piano merchant.

During his adolescence, Harvey was friends with Jean-Jacques Spénard, who was born the same year as him. After his secondary education, Harvey left to study at the École des Beaux-Arts de Montréal. He then completed an internship with the photographer Livernois in Quebec City. In 1933, he began a career as a portrait photographer by setting up his business at 1439, rue Notre-Dame in Trois-Rivières.

On June 2, 1941, Harvey Rivard married Louise Panneton (1915-1968), the eldest daughter of Dr. Auguste Panneton and Anne-Marie Taché. Harvey and Louise had four sons.

Harvey Rivard died in 1995.
